No House Church this Sunday night.  We’ll resume on September 12!

Ella, the Morgan-Scott Mission project coordinator, sent a wonderful note to the church.  I’ve typed it for you below.

I do not have enough words to express my appreciation for all the hard work you all did at the family home.  You made a difference and you did it with love.

Each time I talk to the family they talk about how grateful and thankful they are for what you all did.  There is a look of wonder on their faces when they talk about you all and how good their home looks.  I think they’ve inivted all their family & friends over to check it out.

Thanks for the furniture and the money and many, many thanks to Greg for the 2 new refrigerators.

Love to you all.  You’re the greatest!

God Bless, Ella.

Chautauqua Update

The Chautauqua Institution was formed in 1874 to train Sunday School teachers. It became an ecumenical Christian community almost immediately, with many denominations (including ours) establishing houses on the campus. Over the years it organized itself around the four pillars of The Arts, Education, Religion and Recreation. It eventually opened itself to others and now includes houses for Roman Catholics and Jews, works to include Muslims in its Abrahamic Traditions program. Historic and beautiful, Chautauqua is a magical and faith-filled place.

My program was sponsored by the Religion Department under the direction of the Rev. Dr. Joan Brown Campbell, a key leader in both the National and World Councils of Churches. The program faculty included a number of notable clergy leaders, and the class itself consisted of 13 new clergy from as far away as Santa Fe and spanning a denominational range from a married couple serving a National Baptist church on Virginia’s Eastern Shore to a Roman Catholic Deacon (ordained clergy in that tradition) from Long Island, New York.

Our program added special programming to the already packed Chautauqua schedule… we had small group sessions with the faculty to discuss issues of ministry, met with top leaders and scholars who happened to be on campus, including a session with Karen Armstrong to discuss her internationally acclaimed “Charter for Compassion.”

The main program for the week focused on Sacred Space, with speakers from the documentarian Ken Burns to Bonnie Burnham, president of the World Monuments Fund. The afternoon lecture series focused on Jerusalem as shared sacred space and included Muslim, Jewish and Christian speakers, including a member of the Knesset who is working actively to establish a shared approach to peace.

And of course there was worship… Christian services every morning with the Rev. Dr. Calvin Butts, pastor of Harlem’s historic Abyssinian Baptist Church, an interfaith service, worship in our denominational houses… and concerts, oh the concerts! Every evening there were multiple music and arts offerings…

The New Clergy Program is funded by generous donors and gave me knowledge, books, and most important, dear friends and colleagues…

Let me encourage you all to consider the Chautauqua Institution in your plans for next summer. It will lose its Christian character if Christians stop going! And with three houses on campus, the UCC offers a good selection of affordable accommodations. You can find more information at ciweb.org.

The worship services are also available on CD for those who want them. Many of our home bound disciples receive a CD copy along with the bulletin each week.  This ministry enables them to stay connected even though they can’t physically be with us.  If you know of someone who might be interested, please talk to them about this ministry and if they’d like to recieve a copy each week ask them to call the church office (545-3782).

Thanks to your support in donating 40+ kits to the Church World Service (CWS) Gift of the Heart Kit Program this year.

Since the earthquake in Haiti, CWS has provided more than 31,000 Hygiene kits, 5,400 Baby Care Kits and more than 4,000 Blankets.  For medical support CWS has provided 60 boxes of medical supplies.  Each box contains enough medicine and supplies to treat the routine illnesses of approximately 1,000 adults and children for approximately two months when placed in a rural clinic.

Together, we help people rebuild a life of hope.  Your support of CWS Kits helps meet the needs in the wake of catastrophe and conveys the consoling message that they are not alone in their struggle to recover.  Kits are a gift of hope in time of need.

Fight Fraud – Shred Instead

AARP Pennsylvania was pleased to have the opportunity to work with Colonial Park United Church of Christ on our June 22 “Fight Fraud – Shred Instead” event. The church parking lot was a convenient, accessible destination for area residents to bring documents to be shredded, and Kathy Neely and the church custodian, Ed Fledderjohn were helpful in a number of ways we were so delighted with the results that Bill Johnston-Walsh, AARP PA’s Manager of State Operations, sent an account of the event to AARP’s national office. They in turn have published the story in the national AARP News Now e-newsletter.

It was a delight to work with the church, and I hope we have the opportunity to partner again.

Warm regards,
Kathy Silks Associate,
