Did you know...

Science versus religion.

The epic battle of logic, reason, heart n' soul. Or is it? Francis Collins, the head of the NIH human genome project and finder of the gene for cystic fibrosis, says no. Collins converted to Christianity at the age of 27, while getting his M.D. (post the physics Ph.D btw) and has since been a vocal supporter of the notion that science and religion can coexist. He even managed to get Bill Clinton to say, in his 2000 speech announcing the completion of the HGP, that "...we are learning the language in which God created life."

Now Collins has been plastered all over the media recently, because he has a new book out: "The Language of God: A Scientist Presents Evidence For Belief."

What's in the Sunday, February 21, 2010 Bulletin?
Welcome!

The Discipleship Committee is promoting church family connections by sending cards for special occasions, illness or injury, and sympathy.  Please stop at the table in the back of the Sanctuary and sign your name or write a note to the following members this week:  Gayle Martin & Family, Alberta Atttick who is celebrating her 90th birthday, and Cindy Shannon who has broken a few bones in her foot.

Bud Gruber truly appreciates the many calls, cards of concern and well wishes following his shoulder surgery and recovery at home.  He’s had some complications which have delayed his return to church. He missed you all and hopes to be back to church soon.

Charlotte Blecker thanks each and everyone for the support, love, prayers, cards and kindness you’ve shown during a very difficult time.  She feels truly blessed to belong to such a wonderful & warm church family.

This week’s Ecumenical mid-week Lenten Worship will be at St. Thomas UCC (6490 Linglestown Road) at 7:30p.m.   This week’s theme is “Remade:  A Rock Solid People.”  The Rev. Gary Brinn will be preaching.

New Disciples Class -  If you’ve been visiting with us and have decided you’d like to have more information about becoming a disciple of CPUCC, please join us for a New Disciples class on Tuesday, February 23 at 7:00p.m.  It will help us to have enough materials on hand if you’ll let us know you’re coming.  Please talk to Pastor Bonita or Pastor Gary, or call (545-3782)/email (cpucc@epix.net) the church office to let us know of your interest.  Class will be held in the parlor.

DISCIPLESHIP EDUCATION & FORMATION

Sunday School for all ages is held at 9:30 a.m.

Christianity 101:  Atonement

March 1 at 6:30 pm. we are having what I am sure will be a lively discussion on the topic of atonement.  How might we speak of the significance of Jesus’ death?  The typical formulation that was developed in the Middle Ages is not much help to us today.  That archaic language has confused and even turned off many seekers.  Do our songs and sermons reflect the significance of the work of Christ?  WHY DID GOD COME?  Let’s learn what scholars are saying today.  (Nursery will be available.)

The YAMS are studying "Talking Faith, an Eight-Part Study on Growing and Sharing Your Faith."  We thought this would be an appropriate follow-up to the fall E-vent.  If you would like to deepen your faith and grow in your ability to share it, consider joining us.  The "Talking Faith" course promises to energize us and get us talking with one another about things that really matter.  Together, we will address such topics as "How Do We Know Anything about God?," "What Does God Do?," and "Who's to Say What's Right and Wrong?"  There will be fun activities and great conversation around real world questions.  All are welcome and encouraged to attend on Sundays at 9:30 a.m. in the parsonage.

Save the date:  Women’s Spirituality Retreat – March 20 & 21 at the Van Buskirk Pond! Registration forms are available on the counter in the church office.

CPUCC will host Church Women United’s World Day of Prayer on Friday, March 5 at 1:00 p.m. in our Sanctuary.  This year’s theme is “Let Everything That Has Breath Praise God.”

The 2010 Flower & Bulletin Sponsorship charts are now available.  We’ve changed from hanging it on the wall to a booklet on the counter.   Flowers remain $13 per vase – Bulletins $20 per week.  We’re looking for Bulletin sponsors for February 28 & March 7 and Flower sponsors for March 28,  April 4 & 25, & May 2, 9 & 16.

There will be a concert by the Messiah College Concert Choir on Sunday, March 28 at 7pm.  Messiah College is becoming increasingly  known for its commitment to spiritual and educational excellence, and has recently been ranked as one of the top 10 Christian Liberal Arts Colleges in the country.  Their programs continue to be top-notch, and their Concert Choir is no exception.  I hope everyone will be able to take advantage of this rare opportunity to hear this great choir sing  in our own sanctuary!

Pastor Bonita needs your help.  She is going behind bars for "Good" on March 24. Your donation to the Muscular Dystrophy Association is her key to freedom.  If you wish to help Pastor Bonita earn her freedom from Jail – you may make a donation payable to MDA and place it in her mailbox in the church office.

ECUMENICAL FOOD PANTRY - We are in need of a person(s) to coordinate the volunteers at the food pantry once a month (the first Thursday of each month).  If you would be interested, but need more information please contact Bella Sees at 545-6929.

Mission Trip Fund Raiser – You are invited to join your fellow disciples on March 3 from 5:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. for dinner at Isaac’s Restaurant & Deli at the Oakhurst Shopping Center on Linglestown Rd.  Twenty-five percent (25%) of the total cost of your meal will go directly to support our mission trip to the Morgan/Scott Project in Tennessee.  Bring your friends and family to enjoy great food and great company while supporting this outreach project.  You need to fill out and bring along the flyer in today’s bulletin.

The Fredrickson Library is hosting A Totally Rad Murder Mystery Dinner Theatre – Wed. March 10 or Sat. March 13 at 6:30 pm.   That's right, we're going back to the 80's, so dust off your leg warmers, banana clips, parachute pants and join us for the release party of controversial pop sensation, Ladonna's, newest album "Like a Confession" along with her new fragrance launch.  The evening's celebration will be hosted by former cheerleader and choreographer turned singer, Polly Abdrool.  Polly says the event is gonna totally rock out loud with all the celebrity guests who are attending. She just hopes all the egos get along and nothing lethal happens to spoil the festivities. The party is sure to be totally tubular! Fer Sure!!!!  Tremendously talented actors from several local theatres will be hamming it up just for you & yours. A real-life whodunit takes place right in front of your eyes and hilarity ensues! Can YOU figure out whodunit before the evening ends?  Tickets are $45 per person. BYOB. Ages 21 and up, please. Registration begins January 15, call 761-3900 x225. Ever wonder what the comma in the UCC logo is all about?

In punctuation, a comma means there is more to come, the statement is not finished.  A period means you have come to the end.

We know God is not finished. We know God is still speaking. We know there is more to come.

It is us that needs to listen. We need to change our narrow mindedness. We need to be more accepting of all people.  We need to come to God and listen to help us become better people.

God is still speaking...just listen.

 Summer Mission Trip
Week of July 25, 2010

Mission Trip – Save the date!

The CPUCC will go on its annual mission trip this year to Morgan and Scott counties in Tennessee from July 25, 2010 to July 31, 2010.  Morgan and Scott counties are two of the poorest counties in America.  Morgan-Scott Project (MSP) was founded on Christian concern for the poor in Morgan and Scott counties in rural Tennessee.  Their primary mission is to develop and implement programs that enable impoverished individuals and families within these counties to become healthy, productive, self sustaining members of the community.  A secondary objective is to provide compassionate relief for the elderly and disabled of the community.  CPUCC invites you to help us with our 2010 mission trip needs whether that be by going on the mission trip to contribute your time and talents or by contributing financially.  If you are interested in joining CPUCC on this year’s mission trip please contact Dave Zobeck at llaub4@comcast.net.  You may also call the church office to express an interest in coming along.  zobeckd@yahoo or Linda Laub at
