We invite you to be with us this Sunday, December 3, 2017 at 8:15 & 10:45am when we will celebrate the 1st Sunday in Advent. The theme for Advent is Bearing the Light. We consider how we might bear the light in three ways: internal light that brings inner peace, external light that we share peace with others, and literal light as the days of winter grow darker and darker. Advent invites us to wait, linger, and gestate on peace, hope, joy, and love. We’re encouraged not to create a hierarchical dichotomy between darkness and light where light is equated with goodness and darkness likened to evil; this oppressive dichotomy has contributed to racism within the church for far too long. Rather, these liturgies and reflections invite us to discover and nurture the inner light dwelling within all humanity. Honoring the cycle of the seasons, we return to nature, lighting candles each week as the light of Winter Solstice and Christmas draw closer and closer.
Pastor Cindy will be preaching this week on the theme “Waking Up to the Light” based on the scripture texts from Isaiah 64:1-9 and Ephesians 5:8-14. We will also be celebrating the Sacrament of Holy Communion in the pews. The Sanctuary Choir will present “Journey of Hope” at the 10:45am service.
Sunday School for all ages is held at 9:30am. Click on the link below for the Announcements to see what topics are being discussed in our three adult classes.

17-1203 Journey of Hope
17-1203 Waking Up to the Light
Plan to be with us for “The Charging Station” Sunday nights at 5pm in the Fellowship Hall. Different than our traditional Sunday morning worship, this service is geared toward those who like a more informal worship setting and prefer more “contemporary” music styles. For information contact Pastor Scott at firstname.lastname@example.org or (717-545-3782). You can check out what’s happening each week in the service by clicking on their facebook page https://www.facebook.com/chargingstationhbg/
Upcoming Worship Services:
Join us on Sunday, December 17 at both services for our annual Christmas Cantata. This year we will treat you to Mary McDonough’s Peace Has Come, interspersed with the story of a present-day family who is seeking their own peace this holiday season. We welcome back Shannon, Renee and Tyler Strange playing the family and will have cameos from others in the congregation. The Sanctuary Choir has been working hard and looks forward to sharing this gift with all of you. – Jessica Nupponen, Choir Director
A Blue Christmas Service: For Those Who Find Rejoicing to be Hard Work
On a dark night, December 20, 2017, 7pm, near the longest night of the year, join us as we pause to reflect. There are times when life is good and beautiful, and celebration is appropriate. But there also are times of distress and loss. We experience this distress in response to personal losses and tragic losses that our nation experiences during this season of Advent. Putting words to this season can be difficult. But we do this together in our address to God. There will be various opportunities in the service for you to participate: to sing, to pray, to light a candle, or just to sit quietly.
Christmas Eve Worship – December 24
What time and in what way do you celebrate the birth of Jesus? We know that this can be a full time, but we hope that you will plan to join the CPUCC family sometime on Christmas Eve.
10am We will have ONE morning Worship Service that will celebrate the 4th Sunday of Advent – “Waking to the Light of Love.” The service will be joined by the Sanctuary Choir & Jubilate Ringers.
5-6pm The Charging Station Worship (in the Fellowship Hall)
7pm Celebration Service – special music, the story and the songs in an upbeat and engaging way (nursery will be available) – Did we mention a String Quartet?
11pm Candlelight Service – prayers, lessons, carols, and candle-lighting usher in the birth of Christ, Christmas morning.
Please join us as we tell the story again, and sing carols of celebration. Please note that one half hour prior to the 7 pm and 11pm services we will have a musical recital. All are invited to join in the sounds of the season. If you want to participate in the recital, please contact Scott at (717) 545-3782 or email@example.com.
